Oda tried to portray Oden like a badass and a guy with a tragic ending but he did a really bad job at it. It is one of the worst if not the worst portrayal we got for a character in a flashback (the flashback itself had some good moments for other characters though and we did see a few interesting things for the story)) but Oden ultimately looked like a fucking moron. I think it's probably because Oden was never planned and Oda had to retcon a few things, plus the fact that he tried so hard to show us that Oden was special while the only thing special about him was his strength (not enough to make a character look good if you intend to make that character one of the most important in the arc's plot).
Only enjoyable part for me was his last hour where he endured the boiling and knew they were going to kill him anyway and even acceoted his death, this was kind of the only time he showed some reason and saved his retainers and gave them a reason to live on.
Kyros on the other hand had a real tragic life, was an outcast and when he thought he could have something, he basically lost everything but he kept fighting and protecting what was dear to him without being as much of a fool as Oden was.

Nami didn't have the power to rebel against Arlong, while Oden was arguably stronger than Kaido 25 years ago...
Besides Nami was alone while Oden could rally his scabbards, the Yakuza and probably a bunch of samurais. Nami lived in a weak and small village, Oden lived in a strong country. Even Kaido admitted that.
