Swords and Blades in One Piece have different "Grades" that reflect their quality. But how is a Blades "Grade" created?


We also know that supposedly that a "Grade" can improve over time with the right user, but who or what decides what a Blades "Grade" is?


Is the the Swordsmith that Forges it? And who are the ones who are keeping track of all the "Graded" Blades?

During Japan's Edo period, there was an official sword-cutting appraiser (appointed by the shogunate) whose evaluations were compiled in a book that recorded the grades of various swordsmiths based on the cutting abilities of their forged blades.

One Piece borrows this exact historical naming scheme for its meito grades, with the only difference being that the swords themselves are ranked rather than the smiths.

So a traveling appraiser could exist within the OP world.

1. It must be a Blade
2. It must be Famous (Meaning either Bladesmith or Wielder are Famous)
3. It must be of High Quality

But Law's Sword proves that these Three Conditions are still not enough to make that Blade Graded,
Which means there is at least 1 more Condition,

We know that They don't necessarily need to be Cursed,
Don't need to be Japanese-Style,
Don't need to be Swords,
Don't need to be from some Old Era,

Meito Swords seem to be like Celestial Dragons-Equivalent of Weapons,
In my opinion, I think Original Meito Blades are High Quality Blades that were forged by certain Bladesmiths for certain Clients,
And back then, they were rated to be of Four Qualities, (Base Meito, followed by Skillful, Great & Supreme),

After that, only Blades that were included in this List are those made by those same Bladesmiths or their Descendants/Apprentices, and They were Graded based on how They compare to those OG Ones. Meito Blades imo is just a Specific Family Tree of Top Blades.

The real question is, who were those Clients who acquired First Batch of Meito Blades?
