I was re reading the story and noticed that akainu has had a lot of impact on luffy than any antagonist in op , he broke his will when will power means a lot in one piece
I always thought that sabo would be a good contender to fight akainu as luffy can't fight Imu and akainu in the same arc, but the life long scar that akainu gave to luffy is pretty important as scars that ache mean a lot in one piece like:
-mihawk's scar to zoro
-blackbeard's scar to shanks
-oden's scar to kaido
Even after Akainu is long gone Luffy will still have that scar. Both physically and mentally. No other villain has or ever will hurt him like that.
And from the recent events :
sabo has been the one advancing the revolutionary army plot and he even saw Imu and notified the revos of Imu's existence, which is pretty huge , and he was also attacked by Imu as well.
I think sabo will likely confront Imu at some point as he saw Imu erase an island in front of his eyes and sabo's theme has always been about his hatred towards celestial dragons. While pirates are the ones that are portrayed to have a conflict with the marines
