With chapter 1010, I think Oda has shown us unequivocally that big mom will be defeated in wano and that Eustass Kid will be the primary person who defeats her.
I expected this. It of course made no sense for big mom to be the main antagonist of two major arcs and then return as an antagonist for a third one. It especially didn't make sense for her to be the main antagonist in elbaf, granted that elbaf is the strongest nation and everyone there hates her. When one piece is clearly headed towards its final acts, we don't need another big mom arc.
Do I think Luffy will fight her in the future, like he promised katakuri? Yes, but it won't be eventful. Post-wano, it makes no narrative sense for her to play a major antagonistic role. While luffy will defeat her in the future, Kid must defeat her in wano to retire her role as an antagonist.
This chapter showed us exactly this. Oda could have easily dunked big mom out of the story by having her fall in the water and re-appear later. But prometheus saved her, and Kid and Killer went down from the rooftop to stand before her at the edge of onigashima, something that would only make sense if he were to fight big mom, as has been framed to by the story.
There's another issue that has made fans hesitant to believe big mom will fall, and that is the question of powerscaling. Can Kid really beat big mom? I mean come on, the man didn't even make kaido bleed, how could he beat big mom? Very simply. Oda could logically have Kid beat big mom by giving him just one power up that he could reasonably attain. That being devil fruit awakening.
Magnetism is an absurdly overpowered ability. At its extremes, Kid's powers could rival whitebeard's and at the very least, he can do quite easily things that Luffy needs advanced haki to accomplish. He can make barriers out of magnetic fields and large amounts of metal(such as the onigashima sword), and he can do internal damage by blood iron manipulation.
But awakening might not be enough and even if it was, Kid won't awaken it right away. So what happens? Well I think this fight is a perfect way to bring in apoo, hawkins, and possibly drake and have them do something important. Say apoo and hawkins switched sides and joined the fight against big mom along with drake, would the supernova not have a decent chance at winning. The rooftop fight suggests so, that in a tag team, supernova stand a decent chance against a yonko. Hawkins is the perfect defense, Apoo is the perfect offense, and Kid's sheer physical strength(in punk rotten) can apply a constant stress on big mom. If these 5 team up, Kid might not even need a power up to win, albeit I think he will get one anyways.
To wrap this up, big mom not falling wouldn't just be anticlimactic, it would also deny five supernova: Kid, Killer, Drake, Apoo, and Hawkins, of an otherwise meaningful storyline. What else can they do? And if they are going to fight her, there's no reason Oda can't make them win.
