Deuterantagonist- the person second in importance to the protagonist in a drama.

Yes One Piece does have a Deuterantagonist no it’s not a strawhat it’s the man the myth the legend, Marshall D. Teach.

While it is rare villains can be Deuterantagonist, I think this is one of those instances.

Luffy and Blackbeard situation is very Similar to Naruto and Sasuke in Shippuden. Two characters we follow consistently throughout the story. Each of them leveling up as the story progresses. So different but also so similar.

Beauty of it is that Blackbeard is a villain from start and most likely to finish

1.The Cherry Pie I shared with you….Strawhat Luffy.

Ch.223 Luffy and Blackbeard first meet, both eat a cherry pie and have different opinions on the pie. We then find out they are Polar opposites on almost everything. This interaction also very subtlety tied them both to Portgas D. Ace.

2. Ties That Bind

And although these 2 men disagreed on mostly everything upon their initial interaction There’s one thing they both agreed on.

Dreams…..Outside of Luffy There’s no one who chases their dreams the way Blackbeard does. He’s the one we actively see progressing, he does not fall and just continues to rise.

Like the Strawhats do except there’s a lot more focus.

And one day these two unstoppable forces will meet and that person will decide who the King really is.

Blackbeard is Luffys first Rival similar to Roger and Xebec.

I believe This quote solidified Blackbeard as One Piece’s Deuterantagonist. From this point onward Oda would have Blackbeard consistently develop along with Luffy. I’ll explain…

3.Only Paths we had not known we were meant to walk.

The path Luffy and Blackbeard took to become Yonko is the inverse of each other, Blackbeard accomplishes everything Luffy has accomplished post timeskip in the Pre-Timeskip and Luffy vice versa.

Blackbeard defeated a Yonko Commander in Portgas D. Ace

Defeated a Yonko with the assistance of others.

Obtained his Yonko level power up after the fight

Defeated a YC1 in Marco

And Became an Emperor of the sea

Monkey D. Luffy

Defeated a Yonko Commander in Cracker

Defeated a YC1 in Katakuri

Obtained his Emperor level powerup

Defeated an Empeor with the assistance of others

And Became an Emperor of the sea as well.

And now currently….

Currently Blackbeard is fighting Law for Poneglyph rubbings. So guess what…

I suspect Luffy and Kid will have a confrontation in the near future but it will be about more than just rubbings….. however that is for another thread

And now we’ve reached the end……. A Deuterantagonist does exist in this series this will be even more clear as the story head to its end.

Leave Your Thoughts…

No blackbeard is not like Sasuke. Sasuke played second protagonist role he was also not only introduced as naruto's rival but also important plot that surround uchiha one of the theme plot in manga .

Blackbeard does not have equal portion of panel as sasuke he is another rival for luffy to overcome.

One Piece does not have a single Deuteragonist, rather multiple.
I guess the creation of the Supernovas, was Oda's way of implementing them. Head up it was Law during the New World.
Vivi early in the grandline. Ace partially.
Buggy partially too.

Oda never was set for a Deuteragonist.
But I can see Blackbeard taking that role too. It makes sense too asnit makes sense with many.
