Similar to everyone here I like him because he’s chivalrous and knows how to cook while also being incredibly strong
But for me I think another major reason why I like him is his weird position in the story. If you think about it Sanji is an “other” amongst the Strawhats and sticks out like a sore thumb narratively
In a shonen you typically either have a duo that takes precedence over everyone else (like Goku and Vegeta) or a trio containing the MC, the deuteragonist, and the heroine/relevant female character (Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura)
Now in One Piece you’d assume it’s one or the other but it’s neither. Sanji isn’t the Sakura, or any other character that’s had their role clearly defined in any other series. Sanji is an entirely different thing altogether
Luffy is the protagonist, Zoro is the deuteragonist, and Nami is the heroine so you’d think Sanji wouldn’t fit in anywhere, right? Yet that’s clearly not true
He’s his own unique existence. It feels very intentional to me that Oda put Luffy, Zoro, and Nami in the cover page for chapter 1000 but then went on to put Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji on the cover of volume 100. Two huge milestones that were celebrated with two completely different characters
It feels like Oda took the concept of a “number 3” and split them in 2. Creating the Romance Dawn Trio and the Monster Trio
And even within the Monster Trio Sanji is the odd man out. He isn’t a Supernova, he doesn’t have a legendary mentor, he doesn’t have a legendary figure from hundreds of years ago that he’s directly compared to (Sora is a small possibility but he doesn’t have a tangible one yet)
That’s honestly the main reason why I find it so much more interesting to discuss Sanji than Luffy even though Luffy’s my favorite character in fiction. With a character like Luffy or even Zoro it feels like their paths have been set in stone
You know Luffy’s gonna become the Pirate King and surpass everyone while unlocking almost every powerup imaginable, you know Zoro’s gonna become the World’s Strongest Swordsman while surpassing every swordsman and making his blades black, you know all that.
For Sanji you can’t map out or predict anything because his story hasn’t been written or heavily foreshadowed since the beginning. He’s a walking question mark! Just these past few weeks there have been numerous arguments and threads discussing whether Sanji will unlock conqueror’s haki or not. The answer? No one knows!
That’s what makes him so entertaining! Oda can do anything with him
