Character Discussion Why has Kureha lived so Long

I'm Quite Dandy

Good Day OPA Yoho here to pose another question, Why is it do you think Dr Kureha has lived so long? she's by far the oldest person in one piece even older than most giants in fact the only giants that are canonically older than her is Dory Brogy and Jarul. so that begs the question what has allowed to live for such a long period of time?

I have 3 small theories for why she seems to have extended her life to such long lengths I'll list them from least to most likely

1- Half-Giant- Could her long life span be the result of being half giant? thus inherited their long lives? the only thing that gives me pause on this one is we've met Colon who is half human and half giant and he still towers over everyone outside of Elbaf, so her being half giant whilst not impossible is highly unlikely

2- Run away God Knight? - This would be the most interesting to me imagine a long time ago she used to be one of Imu's god knights or even a former gorosei but somehow, she was able to escape Imu's reach, It will explain why she has such longevity and why she seemed so strong for a old lady. What gives me pause in this one is how would she have escaped Imu, if Oda reveals there is away to somehow block imu from finding you then I can see this being more likely to be true

3- Immortal Surgery- The only way anyone could know that Law's devil fruit grants such abilities is if someone had used it in the past, if someone used it on Kureha that would explain why she's lived so long and I think that will have to come up some point in the story otherwise what was the point of telling us that devil fruit can grant immortal surgery?

Well, she probably can't be a Half-Giant. But, I could see her being a...Sixteenth-Giant or something. You might not need that much Giant blood in you, in order to get a longer life, in this world. Depending on how that works.

Plus, remember, old people have been showed to shrink pretty dramatically in this world. So, there is a chance that Kureha was actually much taller than she is now, back when she was younger. And she's still around 6 feet tall in the present day. So, if she has shrunk at all in her old age, in her prime she would have been quite tall. Like possibly 18 or 20 feet tall.

I wouldn't put money on that, but it's not impossible.

That's a interesting idea. I could see it. We've seen that Garling has aged, even though he's a God's Knight. So, having the Mark doesn't keep you from aging. But, we really don't know if it could grant you a longer life.

It's worth mentioning that we have seen that Kureha has a thigh tattoo. It doesn't look like a Contract Mark, but maybe it's something similar? I doubt that Oda had the God's Knights in mind for that long. But, maybe he could retcon something in. Maybe Kureha's using some other form of "Symbol Magic", not necessarily coming from Imu themselves.

(Chapter 141)

The problem with the idea is that Kureha seems pretty famous. And Drum Island itself is pretty famous for it's doctors. I find it hard to believe that Kureha could have kept herself hidden from the World Government for so long, staying on this particular island. But...it's possible that Kureha and Imu or the WG have some sort of "understanding".

Again, I doubt it, though.
Again, possible. Personally, I think Imu is a more likely candidate to have had the Immortality Surgery done on them, if there's only one character in the story who's ever had it. But, it's possible it's been done to Kureha.

The problem with this is that the Immortality Surgery is more accurately translated as the "Perennial Youth Surgery". Implying that it not only makes you immortal, but also gives you eternal youth, causing you to never age. That would make it a "upgrade" of what Imu can do with the Gorosei's Contracts. And therefore, make it much more desirable for Imu and Doflamingo, but coming at a greater cost of the User having to die. But, we really don't know how that works, yet. But, it's pretty heavily implied that the Immortality Surgery also stops you from aging.

Now, there's nothing saying that Kureha couldn't have gotten the surgery done to her when she was already older. But, I don't think that's likely, myself.

So, all these are possible, but not necessarily slam dunks.

Here's a fourth idea: Could it be the booze?

Every time we see Kureha, she usually has a bottle of alcohol in her hands. She's nearly constantly taking swigs of something. Could what she's drinking be the key to her long life?

Maybe she's so old because she's literally pickled? The booze helping to keep her "preserved".

Maybe she's secretly been drinking Bink's Sake this whole time? Or something similar that could have special properties? Maybe she's not just a booze-hound, maybe she NEEDS to keep drinking this substance to keep herself alive?

I feel like that'd make for a interesting reveal. Even though, I have NO IDEA where she could have possibly have gotten her hands on enough Bink's Sake to last her all this time.

This isn't a perfect explanation, either. But, it's another possibility.

I'm not sure if we'll ever find out the reason why Kureha has managed to live so long. It seems like something Oda would answer in a SBS question, at best. It might just be because she's just THAT good of a doctor, or something. But, I suppose there's a chance it could be plot-relevant later on in the story. Time will tell.
