Questions & Mysteries Why is one piece so popular lately?

#1
When people think of anime, they think of one piece, before it was naruto, dragon ball, etc. Yes, one piece was popular (top 10) but not this popular. I initially thought it was cause Naurto was over but naruto ended in 2014 and One Piece (anime) did not take over for 10 years, also the animation is not stellar (jjk or ds level).

I also don't think it is due to covid cause according to google trend, it started peaking in 2023.

I think the whole “Naruto is more popular than OP” thing has always been wildly overblown, I know WAY more people who fuck with Luffy and crew over the denizens of Konoha…but OP is popular because the story is still really fun and captivating if you don’t have the assholes on this forum and Reddit braying in your ear all the time, that’s definitely a big part of it :smart:

Anime in general has become very popular in recent years, and when you start watching anime you will inevitably end up getting into OP, especially since OP is basically the only "Old-school" shonen all the others that are the gateway for new people into Anime are these new Shonen that end relatively quickly.

Also there's the Netlfix series and the boom OP had with famous Youtubers and Streamers

I'll say it's a matter of OP reclaiming the popularity that got delayed for too long.
Well, OP always faced a lot of problems with REALLY bad distribution around the world.
It was likely the one to suffer the most worldwide from 4Kids censorship that even changed plot compared to Naruto's case which was nowhere near as damaged so it had a way better time getting popular around the world.

Here in Brazil it we had the half volumes from Conrad and I honestly have no idea if that many people knew it was for sale. I think it was about 10~12 years ago when Panini got OP, continued it from W7 while also re-releasing from volume 1, that was when the series was getting more popular again here.
I wouldn't be surprised if other areas had similar situations at some point.

I know some places still had their dubs going on, but speaking about my country, the new dub that started from scratch and uncut was amazing to get a lot more new fans from all ages + the LA was an insane success whether we like it or not (it was quite fun for me).
Oh yeah, we can of course also mention that many other shounen concluded so people who didn't want to start OP got the time to try it.

Lockdown in 2020 and 2021 forced a lot more people to watch it. Before it was the anime known as “way too long to complete” so a lot of people took it as a challenge to catch up and had a lot of free time back then. Then agendapiece helped keep the whole fanbase engaged due to the most toxic debates and whatnot

Then in 2022, film red happened which was one of the most popular anime films ever which increased it even more

Then 2023 was arguably one of the biggest years for it. Live action, all the cool fights in the anime(which had increased quality from prior years), g5 and a ton of action in the manga too (Shanks, Garp, Aokiji, Kuma flashback, Kizaru vs Luffy) and this year took OP to another level. It even won anime of the year

2024 was kinda meh but in 2025 we’re getting a ton of lore drops so far

The anime team really ramped up their quality work for the Wano arc and the fight scenes became viral on Youtube, attracting a lot of casual anime watchers that would have overlooked One Piece for something else.

Quality animation and amazing battle scenes will always save an anime from fading into obscurity.

Manga wise i don't think it ever dipped below top 5 in sales and has almost twice as many all time sales as the second most sold manga

Anime wise it's always been popular but many factors sky rocketed that popularity

G5, Wano and Egghead was off to a great start

With Naruto and Bleach over fans a lot of fans of those 2 series migrated to one piece especially when boruto wasn't that popular and I tybw s1 ended and s2 hadn't began yet

And Anime in general started becoming mainstream with a lot of celebrities coming out saying they like anime

Plus these days most anime are more focused on animation rather than actual story telling

Demon slayer manga never reached the popularity the anime did

Why because the story was subpar

Same with JJK better than demon slayer that's for sure but story wise outside of cool fights and bad ass one liners from a story perspective it was pretty meh
