Frankly it was a simple task. Go to WB's island, get Marco, come back. Surely, given that they waited 20 years to accomplish this mission, Nekomamushi set out so that he could make it in time before the big voyage.
So there had to have been some sort of a setback. What could it have been? Well we know it most likely has nothing to do with Weevil as Weevil was last seen fighting the marines, so there must be some other reason.
Well Nekomamushi's entire goal was to bring allies for the SHs. Marco cannot go because he needs to protect his island, but Neko still needs allies, especially due to the fact that BM allied with Kaido. I think this was the setback, Nekomamushi went out of his way to look for powerful allies that can help them beat kaido. There are several options here so I'm going to lay out everything:

- other Whitebeard remnants. This is one of the most likely options, if Marco cannot help, why not ask the other commanders? Marco can likely tip off Nekomamushi on their location.
- Shanks. Shanks obviously has a stake in the wano war as Kaido killed Oden, who used to be his Nakama. Due to this, Neko might ask Shanks for help. While Shanks might not be able to personally go to wano, he could likely send in several commanders, possibly even one of his top 3. In addition, we know that Bartolomeo is somewhere in Shanks's territory so If he hears that Luffy is in trouble due to BM and Kaido allying, he might round up the grand fleet and bring them to wano. Id say that this is somewhat likely.
- Nekomamushi tries to get help from the Roger /Rocks pirate remnants. As said, the Roger pirates were Oden's nakama, so its possible they might be willing to help avenge him. Perhaps Rayleigh, Scopper, or some unknown Roger pirate could lend a hand. Its also possible that Oden had ties with Rocks. The flashback does take place 41 years ago and we know he sailed with WB, so perhaps Oden was a member of Rocks at one point in time. If this is the case, maybe one of the rocks remnants could lend a hand. This character or any unknown Roger pirate will probably be introduced in the flashback if Oda is going to go this route. Anyways I'd say this has the lowest chance of happening
