Why the tournament of power fails where record of raganarok succeeds

#1
First off
It's a realistic scenario in the confines of the narrative

the gods decided to destroy humanity and so the humans stand up to them in a tournament setting which adds some sort of personal conflict to the event

where in dragon ball super, it just happens cause this man child god says so and there's no narrative element to the fighting other then self preservation for not wanting your own universe to die

This is not to mention that there backstories and various character moments in the record of ragnarok which are just not given in dbs

such as kojiro contemplating his life's failures up to now or adam saying he stands up to the gods as what reason does a man need to protect his children

Best you get in this dbs arc was roshi saying live well my students which btw just due to it having some emotional impact to it was one of the best scenes and it was just one scene of 50 episode plus arc

where record of raganok with three seasons. 15 or so each season gives far more character moments
