Yea it's likely oda just doing it to give zoro a starting point. As he's apparently about to get a crash course when they go fight the hk. It does make sense as it took luffy a year and a half to master the basics of coc. It was a asspull to give zoro adcoc yet also have coc mastery that took luffy a year and half to learn in a few minutes.
It's no dumber than Zoro not recognizing the Seraphim as clones of King by their appearances but strictly by their durability after a long clash lol. Hell, he recognized Mihawk instantly and Daz Bones' fruit the second he saw it in use.

Shouldnt be viewed like that. Mihawk stands as the only remaining Worlds strongest [title]. It's probably more like why use CoC on Zoro that struggled against baboons? He is not a man to hunt rabbits with a cannon, he seeks out the top.
