They didn't eradicate the Taliban. They could have, but that would be a genocide on Afghani soil. Drug lords literally used the same tactics. The FARC camps in Colombia were full of children and women. The communist guerrilla fighters took their families as hostages. Farc killed brazilian soldiers on the border years ago; the Brazilian army retaliated. They killed a couple of these guys and took back stolen guns.

They also found one of their major camps. They would have bombed them sky high, but they didn't because they were using their women and children as hostages. Don't underestimate terrorism. Holding hostages is a pretty effective tactic. Guerrila and assymetrical warfare nulify numbers and tech. it's hard to fight an enemy that hides and attack unprotected people.
