Did you intend to convey any themes or lessons throughout the story?
Or was it more of an expression of free-writing?

Also, if you don't mind, could you add a line or two addressing the setting change or time lapse as the scenes change?

This was one of the best lines;
“When Roronoa surpasses you, and you have to defer to his title, I hope you will repeat that sentiment to his face.”

Overall this was amazing. I admire Mihawk's character greatly now (as I didn't really think too much of him before).
The advanced level of stoicism, ambition, and consistency he shows within the canon is transparent in this story.

Hmm, I'd say the themes have to do with family and loneliness. I tried to convey that it's possible to feel alone even when surrounded by other people, and this is what leads Shanks to return to East Blue. Much as he's close to his crew, they don't understand the full weight of his emotions and responsibilities. They're also his subordinates as much as they are his friends, leading to a skewed power dynamic at times. It's only when Mihawk and Shanks form families of their own that the two find fulfilment and a comfortable purpose in life.

Yeah I can see how time lapse may be confusing, I'll try to add something to clear it up.

I think Mihawk is a much more complex character than he's given credit for and I find it easy to humanise him in the absence of exaggerated traits or quirks (e.g. Usopp's cowardice).

I would like to disagree with anyone that picks Shanks.

Shanks looks like a parent that would give you keys to his car while you are 10 and tell you you will be good no worries.

On the other hand, Mihawk is like this one father that didn't know for 20 years that he was a father and now has to deal with his teenager kid.

The pleasure was mine. Mihawk seems like a character rich with life lessons and complexity. One can only imagine the life he’s had in order to reach the pinnacle of one the hardest paths within the overall story of OP.

Will there be a continuation of this series?

Shanks is the same individual that declined Luffy a spot on the Red Haired Pirates. Given that he’s spending time with his son even at that tender of an age shows he’s caring, especially adding his charisma and joy at baby Ace. Mihawk on the other hand seems much more distant “do what you long as you don’t die” type of father figure. That being said he still cares like a father would.

I chose Shanks since he’s playing a much more active role.

All my other fics will probably tie in to the Higanbana (Iris) series, with Iris and Ace continuing their fathers’ friendships after Shanks dies. My other Shanks/Mihawk birthday fic (#1) also features Ace and the guilt Mihawk feels for not saving Shanks.

The main difference will be the dynamic as childhood friends and possibly romantic interests as opposed to rivals or peers.

Hopefully you’ll find that relationship just as compelling!
