this is the only part you got right. nami helping makes sense. this series is not about who benches more weight its about characters and power interactions. how many times does the series have to make fun of powerscalers with fukurou and doriki or have characters literally turn toward the camera like crocodile in impel down and go "you never know how powers interact"

He always got outside interferences though.

Against Arlong, Luffy was saved from drowning by villagers.
Against Loguetown Buggy, he was saved by (apparently Dragon's) thunder.
Against Loguetown Smoker, he was saved by Dragon.
Against Crocodile, he was saved by Robin.
Against Lucci, Usopp distracted Lucci so Luffy can recover.
