Oda set it up like that because Zoro was meant to be taken out of the fight, as it's Luffy's fight to win. Can't throw Luffy in front of the Hakai, otherwise he'd be the one heading down, and Oda would never do that. Zoro's role is to set Luffy up for the win, not the other way around.

If by heading down you mean 6 feet under then yeah. Luffy would be dead.

He recovered pretty quickly from a much more powerful attack, while already injured to begin with. If Base Luffy plus AdCoC can do what it is doing to Kaido with no named attacks, then imagine how powerful named AdCoC attacks from Hybrid Kaido are. And it only put Luffy out for less than a minute.
