Luffy is one of the 2 guys to fight Kaido 1v1 and the only guy who'll fight him 1v1 in his hybrid form. Again, killing Kaido is extremely good from a portrayal point of view, but is it as good a strength feat when he's already defeated?

He wasnt supposed to. He is not going to be the PK. Its a massive W for him that Oda decided to put him at the rooftop. Think about it, it was easier for Oda to have a Luffy-Law-Kidd vs Kaido. But the pirate hunter is so great that Oda had to make it a 5vs2


Yeah, he hid behind Zoro and saved himself from the strongest attack in the series from two yonkos. Pretty easy to look good when someone else is doing the hard work for you

Oda set it up like that because Zoro was meant to be taken out of the fight, as it's Luffy's fight to win. Can't throw Luffy in front of the Hakai, otherwise he'd be the one heading down, and Oda would never do that. Zoro's role is to set Luffy up for the win, not the other way around.

It's also highly plausible that Oda made all of Zoro's best moments happen earlier, so he focuses on his development later. Giving him his FB and connection to Wano. Then avenging Yasuie and either slaying the Yamato no Orochi by himself or slaying the Genbu.
