I'm laughing at reading some users arguing that the Gomu Gomu isn't necessarily special and that it may have been just eaten by a top figure in the past, as if the problem here was the fruit itself being utterly powerful or something like that instead of the narrative behind turning everything around Luffy into a "coincidental" link to the elite of this universe.

The point is that because it's not powerful, the link isn't cumbersome. You're talking about a main character who couldn't begin to give a shit about that, so really it's not worth shit. Luffy has worked his ass off and the mere suggestion that he was "destined" to have it doesn't change that at all.

Why do we need everything from Luffy to be special in some way? Why can't Oda leave behind one of most boring and uninspired tropes in Japanese stories and not turn his character into the chosen one? For real, I hope he's just playing with us and with completely shift from that direction somehow, like Luffy learning about Joy Boy, prophecies, etc. yet ignoring it because his actions can't be determined as he's a free man.
