Sanji was wrong but he won't let that in his ways. He even said it himself.

Sanji legitimate never took a genuine L in the entire series.

Marco, Smoker, Tashigi, Jack, etc. got way more L's than Sanji by far.

I don't think that it was that humiliating to be honnest, Usopp was alone against dozens or hundreds of men as strong or stronger then him and his weapon wouldn't have done much against them, it's really Usopp who made a far bigger deal of what it really was due to his inferiority complex.
