If a character is shitting his pants, warning about it, and then running away with a mouth opened larger than an entire's person head, then he's just terrified of that attack and can't overpower it by himself. Simple as that. Provide proof if you claim otherwise. It's also easy to say "Zoro didn't kill Kaido in one-hit because he was saving stamina. Source: trust me bro" but that doesn't make it any smart.

There's a reason why almost all of Zoro's fights end the moment his opponent touches the ground for the first time. Ask someone to cut off your arm, and ask them to shove you. You'd fall from the shove but not from having your arm cut but both of us know which damage is greater.
And yes, Zoro was disappointed because he couldn't defeat Kaido with his attacks and that's what the japanese dialogues claim, not a knock down
Knocking down doesn't mean shit. Scabbards' Togen Totsuka had Kaido on the ground and then he called their attack fodder and said it wasn't even deep enough to open up an old wound, let alone create a whole new scar.
