General & Others As Oda’s editor, what are your tips?

#1
Assuming you are now hired as oda editor, what advices you will give him to make the manga better?

- do not hesitate killing characters , kill Jinbei and vinsmokes and show it on panel .this is the yonko saga .. it must be dark and dangerous ... fill Wano arc with death...why make babanuki alive? Just why? Don’t do it again because everyone hate it

- keep up your current pacing , one of the major problems of your manga is the slow pacing.. almost all arcs suffer from this disaster

- do NOT focus on side characters too much, too much focus can become painful and most reader don’t care about them

- try to reduce the Luffy spotlight

I think Oda is a Coward he tries to keep everything and secret he is so scared to give away anything even powerlevels that he goes out of his way to offpanel the most amazing fights in his series i would tell him to stop offpaneling shit.

1- Less attention to side characters and their quirks and gags, and more focus on the prominant characters who are big factors in the grand scheme of things (example in this arc are Holdem, Urashima and Oniwabansho group who were clearly a BIG disappointment). If they are that bad, do not show them to begin with.

2- I would give more highlight to the martial arts and skills than brute force and haki.
An example is (Sanji should not be matched with kicks by many opponents just because of haki) when Sanji is in a battle of kicking with Vergo or Doffy, I would give Sanji the edge during the clash of kicking. However, I would give give Mingo the edge once he starts using his ability of DF and hands for example.

This is just an example. But what I'm trying to say is that martial arts (which is the base for everything) became unnecessary and not important in the presence of Haki.

It can be applied to Zoro or swordsmen as well. But sadly, instead of focusing on Zoro developing new moves, new variation of slashes, new techniques of swordsmanship. It became a battle of who got stronger armament haki. Which made martial arts in One Piece lose its beauty. And unique characters with unique techniques became random because the reliance now is only Haki.

I want martial arts to shine, and have the same importance as Devil Fruits and Haki.

3- I would advise Oda to use advantage of hyped moment to focus on them, and not tease them until a time the fans do not care about this hyped moment and just want to see the new stuff.
Example is if there was a foreshadowed character to appear as traitor of Kaido (Drake). And fans already realized he was the one who helped Law.
There is no need to delay the fucking reveal. Everyone knows, and do not show me the reveal it was Drake When NO one gives a shit about that event.

Only tease stuff when the answer is truly unexpected to everyone when it will really shock us.

Dont make one piece too dramatic with useless cliffhangers like not revealing kappa face for ages

Don't drag side plots at the cost of important stuffs

Focus on strawhats as a crew. Give them character development, more on screen time and strength development with one vs one so that they start looking like future Pirate king crew and not some rookies and side characters. This is very important as from now onwards their would be many more big players in an arc and I am afraid that apart from Luffy and zoro, rest would simply become side characters.

Develop Luffy more as a captain.

Stop bringing inconsistencies for the sake of plot advancement.

GIVE FRANKY A GUNDAM :zehaha:

In all seriousness, the two problems I have with this series (too many unimportant side characters and not enough on-panel fights) are well trod ground both in this thread and the fandom in general...otherwise, everything else he’s done is defensible to an extent. None of us would be here debating the merits of his writing style if we didn’t enjoy it quite a bit; you can still have complaints or point out the flaws of something you love without any diminishing affection.

When people do not even have a grasp of basics of storytelling, their mouth can flow like a waterfall, the author does not need to pay any attention
here is the thing , you don't always need "story telling advise" to make your story better

people , normal people who never worte a single fiction in their life can still be helpful cause they may very well point at the thing writer didn't even KNOW it was wrong ...

well , I guess if I kepp speaking about it you gonna be like "how are you to ..."

don't take it for me .... take it form patrick rothfuss ... (just few search can be enough to find his quotes) about how simple people with no grasp of basics of storytelling were able to improve Name of the Wind

story is an art about people ... and it's ALL the people , not just the one with grasp of basics of storytelling in them

I heard a great quote about writing (not sure who said it) a long time ago when I was editing my first novel and getting feedback from friends and family - if someone tells you there’s something wrong with what you’ve written, they’re almost certainly right; if they tell you how to fix it, they’re almost certainly wrong.

Fans can tell when Oda’s storytelling isn’t up to snuff, but ultimately, it’s on him to make it work somehow, and we have a lot of evidence that suggests he knows what he’s doing, even if we aren’t 100 percent thrilled with everything.

it's true. and if you wrote yourself you know some times you would come up with some thing good base of some advise ...

if some one EVER told you how to FIX your story , punch in the face ...

but IF you are willing to take advise , take from all cause you don't know really which one can be truly useful for you

and since you already know the "BASICS" , most likely BASIC advise or even advance story telling advise are not THAT useful for a pro ... he already should know all of them

The best advice I got was more about what NOT to do, as I think a lot of people on this thread are offering similar thoughts...some are getting detailed, which is fine, but pointing out what doesn’t work is honestly more impactful than telling someone how to fix it. Like you said, better to get an idea of what doesn’t work universally than try to reconcile a million suggestions of what people wanna see; you end up being unable to please everyone with the latter.
