My point was that the series had a wide appeal due to creating characters that had universal appeal.

Yes, the loveable characters are a reason why the series is so liked.

While that's impressive the story itself is kinda generic

A lot just care about the quality of the story, rather than if it's entirely innovative. The fact that the story itself is nothing new yet managed to capture the hearts of a nation in a manner that we've never seen before is honestly just further testament to how special it is.
