In this specific order:

  1. Berserk
  2. Kingdom
  3. Vinland Saga
  4. Vagabond (I haven't read too much of this yet).:catcry:

Alright, so I'm a little biased when it comes to Berserk.

I've been reading this series for about twelve years, so it's placed slightly on a pedestal. It came at a point in my life where I was dealing with a lot, so when I reflect on those days, Berserk comes to mind.

Which of these 4 fantastic mangas do you think is the best overall?

As much as I like Berserk, Vinland Saga had more of an impact in terms of real-life lessons and introspection. Objectively, Vinland Saga has been a better read, despite how much I favor Berserk.

Which one has the best art?

All four of these have phenomenal art, in my opinion. It's tough choosing, but I'll have to go with Kingdom just for the sheer landscape and scope whenever we're in a campaign. My second favorite would likely be Berserk, just for the shared nostalgia and the highly memorable panels, such as Zodd's first introduction and the eclipse.

Which manga has the best antagonists?

I've never hated a character as much as Griffith. What he did was some of the worst things I've ever seen done in seinen. What he did to Casca and the rest of the BotH is just unforgettable. Unfortunately, we won't ever really get closure now (RIP Miura).

What are your favorite moments from each manga?

This one is hard to answer due to me not having read some of these recently. I'll have to get back to you on this.

Which manga has the best worldbuilding?

I've thoroughly enjoyed the politics in Kingdom. While we would have wars, it was equally enjoyable watching the power struggles that occurred behind the scenes, so I'll have to go with Kingdom here.

I can't speak for Vagabond yet, but based on what I've seen so far, I know I'm in for a treat. Whenever I get around to rereading some of these, I'll see if I can edit this post to add more.

Great thread, by the way.

I haven't read Kingdom so I'll rank the other three.

Which one do you think has the best mc?
I personally think Guts. Musashi and Thorfinn are really well written characters as well.

Which manga has the best supporting cast?
Hmm I would say Berserk and Vagabond have an edge over Vinland here. I would personally go with Vagabond.

Which manga has the best designs?
Vagabond.

Which manga has the best antagonists?
Berserk takes this. I really like Sasaki Kojiro as well.

Which one has the best art?
Berserk & Vagabond. Can't really choose between the two lol.

Which story has the best fights?
Berserk and Vagabond.

Which manga has the best character development?
Vagabond and Vinland Saga IMO.

Which manga has the best worldbuilding?
Berserk.

Which manga has the best story arcs?
Golden Age arc from Berserk, Yoshioka Arc from Vagabond and Farmland Arc from Vinland.

Berserk. Easily. I haven’t read a lot of Kingdom but I could write an essay about why I think Berserk is better than Vinland Saga and Vagabond.

Which of these 4 mangas do you think is the best overall?
Berserk.
It's just the most flawless and ambitious of them all. If you put aside personal taste or expectations, Berserk has never once failed to deliver on what was "promised" and making sure all development felt natural to the story.

I consider Vagabond to be the same, but just more of a collection of history based stories.

Kingdom would've been the same, but Hara messed up the subtlety of Shin, Ten, Kai, Rei & Shiyuu/Bushin. Even with the supernatural restrictions, he definitely could've integrated it far better into his warring state setting. Feels like Hara just took the lazy route in regards to fleshing it all out.

I haven't read Vinland in a while, but before I stopped reading, I do remember thinking the author was losing the subtlety of his characters, like Hild, Thorkell, Einar. Just a small change about their initial characterization that turned them "generic". Felt like the story just became shallow

Which one do you think has the best mc?
equally: Berserk, Vagabond, Vinland saga
The MCs are realistic within their own world. They change and their actions/goals are questioned. Shin is unfortunately a "Shonen" Mc in a Seinen world.

Which manga has the best supporting cast?
Kingdom.
There are just many more often recurrent relevant "strong" cast in Kingdom compared to the others. Kingdom's relevant side characters are just more "central" to the story, so we see them much more often, rather then them being scattered. In Kingdom every enemy's main goal is Qin, while in the others the enemies has their own goal unrelated to the main cast.

Which manga has the best designs?
All of them.
Berserk is the most complex, but within the individual styles of their worlds, the designs are all well done and fitting. Despite so many characters in Kingdom and Vagabond looking similar, they all still manage to stand out.

Which manga has the best antagonists?
Main antagonist: Berserk.
Side antagonist: equally Berserk, Vagabond, Kingdom.
Vinland Saga just doesn't have that many different antagonists, even through they are well written. Askeladd is a great villan, but he's not really a main one.

Which one has the best art?
All of them.
Objectively: Berserk/Vinland Saga => Kingdom => Vagabond
They all have a "natural" style that fits their narrative. With Vagabond being the best example, the rugged style is reminiscent of Mushashi's way life, a clean art would feel weird.

Which story has the best fights?
Berserk => Vagabond.
Berserk just has more variety in fighting styles and ways to win a fight. The other 3 are just simply weapon martial art fights, but each individual fight in Vagabond carries much more emotional weight to the main character compared to the other 2 and they fights a few in total. I like the way Hara portrays the Shiyuu's fast movement, it looks like one of those Break-dancing (Copoeira) fighting style, especially when Kyoukai jumps.

Which manga has the best character development?
Berserk => Vagabond/Vinland Saga
Everybody's actions and goals are continuously questioned.
Kingdom questions its side characters, but mostly on a "surface level" without much introspection. The MCs even less.

Which manga has the best worldbuilding?
Berserk.
If you told me that Kingdom and Berserk took place in the same universe, I would believe you. That's how well the warring states period was integrated within the supernatural aspect of the Berserk world. All 4 of them do a great job of recreating their respective "historical period" without it feeling like a lazy copy paste.

Which manga has the best story arcs?
All of them.
Of course they have different scales/depths, but within the respective mangas, the arcs were well structured and written. Kingdom kinda changed after 500+ chaps sometimes during the Gyou arc, Vinland Saga changed sometimes around the arc involving Garm, the spear guy.

Berserk and Vagabond always remained consistent writing wise, with only changes in "style", rather than a drop in "quality"

What are your favorite moments from each manga?
Ehhh, I can't pick.

Share your personal rankings of the 4 manga.
Berserk: ambitious and consistent writing wise.

Vagabond: In-depth themes and consistent.

Kingdom: ambitious but subtle drop in quality.

Vinland Saga: good story but subtle drop in quality.

I've only watched the anime of Vinland Saga and neither read nor watched Vagabond so answering these will be rather difficult for me. I may come back to the thread later after reading both though.
Vagabond doesn't have an anime sadly. Doesn't the Vinland Saga anime only cover the very first arc?

I personally think Guts. Musashi and Thorfinn are really well written characters as well.
All three of those are excellent, agree with Guts being the best.

Berserk takes this. I really like Sasaki Kojiro as well.
Kojiro is an interesting character, and Griffith and Zodd are two of my favorite characters in all of manga.

Berserk & Vagabond. Can't really choose between the two lol.
Berserk has better imagery imo, i feel like Vinland Saga is below these two for sure. Not saying that Vinland has bad art, it's just not onpar.

Yeah, I agree. Kingdom has sooo many decent written side characters. Ousen, Moubu, Tou, Kanki, Yotanwa, Baijo, Shouheikun, Mougou, Duke Hyou, etc, Saitaku, Ouhon, Mouten, King of Qi.

Kingdom has done an excellent job of giving those characters adequate screentime.

Berserk is the most complex, but within the individual styles of their worlds, the designs are all well done and fitting. Despite so many characters in Kingdom and Vagabond looking similar, they all still manage to stand out.
Agree.

So many dudes in Vagabond have the same hairstyle, but they still manage to look completely distinct from each other. Kingdom characters like Kochou and Rokuomi don't have the most original designs, but they still manage to be memorable.

Main antagonist: Berserk.
Side antagonist: equally Berserk, Vagabond, Kingdom.
Griffith and his new band of hawk are fantastic, and soo many of the side apostles were great opponents for Guts. The Count, Rosine, etc.

Kohei and Inshun were the most memorable Vagabond antagonists to me after Kojiro.

Riboku and Ryofui are great villains, and I enjoyed Gokei, Renpa and the heavenly Kings too.

f you told me that Kingdom and Berserk took place in the same universe, I would believe you. That's how well the warring states period was integrated within the supernatural aspect of the Berserk world. All 4 of them do a great job of recreating their respective "historical period" without it feeling like a lazy copy paste.
I remember wishing we could get more information on the Kushan Empire during one of my Berserk reads, seeing faction clashes during the Golden Age was also interesting.

My thoughts:

Which of these 4 fantastic mangas do you think is the best overall?
I think Berserk is objectively the best of these 4.

Which one do you think has the best mc?
Easily Guts. He is an amazingly well crafted character. His relationship with Casca and his traveling party are touchingly emotional and well written.

Which manga has the best supporting cast?
Kingdom has a very memorable cast of supporting characters.

Which manga has the best designs?
Berserk>Vagabond=Vinland Saga=Kingdom imo.

Miura was a master of crafting amazing designs, the apostles are all almost perfect in terms of design:

Which manga has the best antagonists?
Berserk>Vagabond=Kingdom>Vinland Saga imo.

Which one has the best art?
Berserk>=Vagabond>Kingdom>Vinland Saga.

Which story has the best fights?
Vagabond fights always have great build up and emotional weight, along with fantastic art. Berserk fights have fantastic art too. Kingdom has Rinko vs Shin, which I consider to be the best "shonen" fight.

Which manga has the best character development?
Easily Berserk imo.

Which manga has the best worldbuilding?
Vagabond/Kingdom/Vinland Saga all perfectly develop their worlds, based off historical information and own ideas by the author.

I'd give a slight edge to Berserk tho.

Which manga has the best story arcs?
All of them.

What are your favorite moments from each manga?
From Berserk: Zodd's first appearance, Guts vs Griffith, The Eclipse, Guts vs Rosine, The revival of Griffith, Ganishika vs Zodd and Guts, The creation of Griffith's empire, every scene with the Skull Knight.

Vagabond: The end of every duel.

Vinland Saga: Askeladd killing the King, then being killed by Canute.

Kingdom: Sei vs Ryofui, Hyou breaking Houken's arm, Ouki's death, Renpa breaking through Mougou's fort, etc.

Berserk>Kingdom>=Vagabond>Vinland Saga. I think Vagabond is better than Kingdom, but I still like Kingdom more.

No love for Shoubunkun?

He is not as strong, smart, nor charismatic as the top dogs. Often used as "sweating" character to hype major events or another character. But he is a very likeable character since the first arc.

He's cool too, he and Heki are great "normal" characters I like seeing every now and then.
