Not really King was far away from Zoro when he started his attack. Whilst he was already holding Sanji.

But the fact he's this strong and no flyer respect his strength to a point he needed to use Kaido's name to summon them shows that He isn't a conqueror and isn't that very powerful like katakuri

Reminder WsW and Sasaki spent years under Kaido ! They saw King in action as Kaido takes his officers on expeditions as stated by Yamato.

Luffy is written to be bland and uninteresting by Oda.

Whether you like it or not, characters like Zoro, Cook, Law, and Kidd is written by Oda to have more personalities to them that people would just like to talk about.

For me it's the opposite with zoro. I love him but he's boring all that makes him somewhat enjoyable is his fights. Luffy is interesting and unpredictable you never know what he is gonna say.
