I have always been of the view that Oden was the one with the upper hand on Kaido and it was due to some cheap tactics either from Orochi or whoever which led to Oden sacrificing himself.
Someone wouldn't be said to have sacrificed himself if he was already defeated

Characters grow and get stronger and even back then it needed a powerhorse like Oden with one of the strongest swords and pretty sure heavily improved Haki.
