His flashback isn't sympathetic; we have no idea about how he was captured, or even if he had a role in the extinction of the others in his race. Kaido was also captured in that facility and clearly not a good person by that point, so that by itself isn't enough to say King necessarily had any innocence.

If you said Hachi would be a good guy you would have eventually been right, but saying that during Skypiea for instance, you'd have been pulling that outta your ass.
