General & Others Were Shanks and Buggy toddlers in the Roger crew?

#1

These panels here are interesting since they imply that Roger and Rayleigh came across babies at one point or even had babies on the crew at one point.

In the same chapter it's emphasized that Shanks and Buggy have been on the crew "FOR AGES" which is the same terminology Rayleigh and Roger use to describe when they had babies on their crews

Given the fact that the earliest we've seen Buggy and Shanks on the crew is fee chapters ago and 30 years in the past. We can tell that by Age 9 they were both on the crew.

What's interesting is that they were born on different oceans nonetheless, Buggy being from the Grandline and Shanks being from the West blue.

I think Shanks and Buggy were literal babies when they were picked up between in both Oceans and it's possible since it doesn't take more than a few month to travel between oceans.

The question is why these particular babies were picked up?

For Shanks, it's probably related to the reason Roger gave him the straw hat. It happened at such an early age that people don't even remember Roger wearing a straw hat when they look at Luffy.

For Buggy, I assume he was just born blessed as usual. Buggy getting picked up was just a case of the stars aligning for him. I believe he'll serve a very important role at the end of the story, but I don't think Roger or Rayleigh saw his massive potential or something.

Buggy most likely is royal ...

Shanks? a slave? son of Rock? son of Imu?

I can't really tell ...

who ever gave Whitebeard his scar should be the father/mother of Shanks .... since we get to see it's not Roger as a fact
I like this post, a lot.

And I also have the opinion that Shanks could be the son of Rox.
But I'm kind of curious, what gave you the idea that Buggy might've been a royal?

Shanks is a celestial dragon, hence the gorosei are buddies of his

bingo. sengoku was all like 'oh you want WB's body? sure thing, son, IT'S YOU, after all' for the same reason.

the gorosei appear to be the strongest and most accomplished among the CDs. i believe the 5 of them 'shanksed' their way through the ranks back in the day. shanks is supposed to be one of their successors.

both luffy and buggy - two characters that we know who are/were the closest* to shanks - are in for a nasty surprise regarding the true nature and intentions of this guy they thought they knew...

*(leaving rayleigh out of this because he's pretty much an old fart who's given up on everything)
I don't know if shanks is necessarily evil tho

I think Shanks wants the celestial dragons to be defeated while at the same time, he wants to look out for his people. I don't think he wants to see the celestial dragons genocided whenever the people take mariejois.

i see.

well, i think he *is* evil. i think he poisoned 'inconvenient' people that sailed on oro jackson: roger, toki and buggy. they all got sick. and i don't think he's a man of his own agenda - he's shockingly unambitious (for someone who's so 'strong' and popular and smart and has all the right connections...). he's where he is because he's a cog in the top level WG machine.

and if he really wanted the CDs to be defeated, why would he snitch on a pirate to the gorosei? does he think they don't have enough control over everything in the OP-verse as it is? everyone is quick to assume he's snitching on teach (still a nasty rat thing to do tbh) but i'm pretty sure it's someone else. everyone already knows teach is collecting dangerous criminals for nefarious purposes - as well as nifty devil fruits so there's literally no reason at all to snitch on him.

Yeah, Shanks got interesting in the reverie..
But I think things differently with Shanks..

Shanks is son of Rox, and Roger protected him ever since he was a little kid, since he was hunted by the WG goons for being nothing but just that.... This is why he admired Roger.. and the reason he became a Yonko was so that he could protect Roger's legacy from guys like Blackbeard - he has to be strong to do that - But on his way to being Yonko, the Gorosei were cautious on him, so he assured them in the past, that he was not going to do change the world or something.... and assured them that they have common ground...

Both wanted to prevent the One Piece from being discovered.

This is why he can go to Reverie and talk to those guys.. it's because he gained their trust, from his words and from his actions.... Shanks stopped Kaido from going to Marineford; Shanks even informed the WG that he was to meet with Whitebeard; even Sengoku had a certain level of respect for Shanks....

Shanks going to reverie was probably a last resort... He was cautious about that "certain pirate" (which I believe is Blackbeard) that he was concerned about, to the point that he advised WB not to go after him 2 years ago, and seeing this "certain pirate" grow stronger, year by year, it went to the point that he feared for his potential, to the point that he believes that this "certain pirate" could.. well.. you get the idea.

This is just my headcannon anyway...

here's how i would counter what you said:

1) son of rocks trusted by the WG? rocks, along with roger, was one of their nightmare 'undesirables'. the WG hated roger so much they commited large-scale infanticide to make sure he has NO legacy. ace, who in this situation would be in a similar position to shanks, was doomed from the start. can you see ace walzing into mariejois and crashing the gorosei tea party? i can't. rocks' son wouldn't be treated the way shanks is treated because rocks' son would be a D and the WG hates ALL Ds.

2) the bold part: we never saw that. it's only something we have been told by characters who, i, personally, don't think are particularly trustworthy. what we know is that kaido didn't show up at marineford - that's it. remember that WG and kaido used to be crewmates? it's not impossible that kaido, though he's an asshole, wanted to go help WB - i think shanks stopped him from going and once the SHs defeat kaido, he'll drop the bomb on them. but that's also 'headcanon' at this point. we really don't know.

3) the underlined part: yeah why? to earn their trust? the trust of the people who killed his 'dad' rocks, who practise slavery, history fraud and genocide? uh... just another day in a snitch's life is what i'm seeing here. what makes a lot more sense to me is that the CDs needed a mole to infiltrate the very dangerous gol D roger's crew and had their own little dragonspawn do it because kids are cute and wherever shanks goes, the Ds get in trouble, get sick or die.

4) the italics part: yeah and why would sengoku respect rocks' son? did he respect ace? no. the admirals have one master only.
Lol, it's just a headcannon. xD

I don't really have much proof, since I'm just going with first impressions.. I could be just as wrong as the next guy. :p I do like the point you brought up in 1), but I'll comment on all those points anyway.

here's how i would counter what you said:

1) son of rocks trusted by the WG? rocks, along with roger, was one of their nightmare 'undesirables'. the WG hated roger so much they commited large-scale infanticide to make sure he has NO legacy. ace, who in this situation would be in a similar position to shanks, was doomed from the start. can you see ace walzing into mariejois and crashing the gorosei tea party? i can't. rocks' son wouldn't be treated the way shanks is treated because rocks' son would be a D and the WG hates ALL Ds.
1) You have a great point with Ace, and it's a legit counter. But I would argue that with Ace, it was clear he was gonna aim for the top... his rapid growth, declining the Shichibukai, aiming for Whitebeard as soon as he got to NW... the WG wanted to get him asap and set an example.. it was obvious he was aiming for PK.

With Shanks, well.. it just seems that the Gorosei were familiar with him since chapter 233, with one of them saying he wasn't the sort of person to want to cause chaos or something like that... it's as if Shanks encountered them way back and reassured them of his motives, his aim, what he opts to do etc... And his actions thus far, seem to portray him as a pacifist in a way, always wanting to avoid chaos in the world.

Would it be better for Gorosei to accept talks with a Yonko who shares a common ground with you? A guy with a peacekeeping resume, and especially one who has no desire to cause world chaos? I think so.

2) Be that as it may, just because you never saw it, doesn't mean it didn't happen.
Oda conveyed this from his manga.. not once, but twice even....

It's like not believing the scholars of Ohara, just because we never saw this ancient kingdom or raftel...
And why would Kaido help Whitebeard?

For an alliance, you have to have common ground... Big Mom and Kaido had a lot of common ground - both wanted a slice of Luffy, both wanted to take over the world; Law and Luffy agreed to take down Kaido, a common ground; why would Kaido be concerned with Ace in particular? He should be rejoicing for having his worst enemy's son get sexually magma fisted in the chest.

Even if you ignore common ground, Whitebeard is different in character to Big Mom and Kaido...
Far too different.

3) Well, what if Shanks hated his father (assuming he's Rox's son), and had no grudge to the WG or Roger who were responsible for Rox's downfall? It's similar to X-Drake, who bore no grudge on Doffy, who killed his father long back, iirc. It could be why Shanks loved and respected Roger.... Shanks hated his father, and Roger was responsible for his downfall... Roger also took him in as a way to protect him.

4) the italics part: yeah and why would sengoku respect rocks' son? did he respect ace? no. the admirals have one master only.
4) Bad point.. Sengoku respected Shanks enough to abide to the latter's requests in marineford.

There is also another point I'd like to bring up:

All the other Yonkos are related to Rox, in one way or another. Whitebeard, Big Mom and Kaido were former members of the Rox pirates; Blackbeard is trying to be a Rox 2.0 - even his ship bore Rox's name. It's definitely not impossible to think Shanks could also in some way be related to Rox as well, imo.
