As the title says rate Luffy as a protagonist. Of course the scope should be other manga. Mostly shonen and seinen.

So how do you rate Luffy?

Post timeskip 0/10. Pre timeskip 8/10.

Luffy pre timeskip was actually smart, actually competent and thought about the bigger picture. He slapped Vivi and criticised her naรฏvetรฉ, and instantly understood how much Nami had sacrificed because of Arlong, even without listening to her backstory. Pre timeskip Luffy understood that in war, people die. Post timeskip Luffy is an ADHD ball of retardation and Gary Stu levels of plot warping Messianic complex. Canโ€™t understand basic sentences from Franky at FMI and spouts dumbass naive shit like โ€˜even if you die, donโ€™t dieโ€™. Fuck post timeskip Luffy, heโ€™s an absolute clown and an embarrassment to what the character himself used to be.

if it's only manga and not overall fiction then Luffy is not that bad. Before the time skip he wasn't bad, he was really fun and had epic moments. Even post skip with power creativity (G4) and some moments he wasn't 0, but lot less fun and more clichรฉ

overall 5/6 out of ten, lets say 6 because i have a lot of good moments in my mind

As a representation and personification of OPs themes, he works well, and people expecting him to change have missed the point, for better or worse.

Plus he is pretty funny, at least for me.

But post-ts Oda is just going through the motions and has sacrificed a lot of things pre-ts did much better.

Pre timeskip. 8/10 fits the bill, matches the tone of the story, knows when to turn up or turn down. Was a rookie in the game who didn't suffer any losses so we can excuse his rash headstrong behaviour.

Post timeskip 3/10. Doesn't match the tone of the New World, and his antics are tired. No real character development after the events of Sabaody, MF. Continues to make retarded decisions for him and his crew yet constantly bailed out by everything conveniently falling in his lap. Others around him don't get that benefit, and he's slowly headed towards messiah territory.

Pre Time Skip Luffy is one of the better shonen mcs, for me, easily above the likes of Naruto/Goku/Ichigo. I'd say, 7/10.

Post Time Skip Luffy is a complete regression and character flanderization. He went from telling Vivi that "people die" to telling Jinbe to "not to die even if he dies". The chosen one tropes also got worse and worse, it was kind of a problem pre time skip but post time skip(Wano in particular) has been full of them. 3/10.

Well, Luffy obviously is not a shit tier MC like Shinji, Suzaku, and Kazuya.

And if his true dream and eventual death are explored properly, he is obviously above the likes of Ichigo and Naruto.

But it is a given that he is below the likes of Lelouch, Ed, and Okabe.

I think a 6 out of 10 is fair.

Pre timeskip I could give him 7 or 8. Post timeskip for most part he deserved a 5 or 4. It went down to 1 or 2 on WCI and now 0 or negative in Wano.

Luffy is not a good protagonist to me.
  1. He is told to be someone who never lies because he suck at it but he do it consistently enough to be a lie(like telling Zoro he is taking New World serious or that he won't lose to Kaido anymore and getting arrested over and over and losing to Kaido again).
  2. He is told to always protect his nakamas but since post timeskip he is the one being protected and putting his nakamas in danger. It was really ridiculous having Sanji and Jinbei helping him to reach rooftop while Nami and Usopp were nearly killed by Ulti and Page One. Luffy was suppose to be the strongest and he clashed with Ulti he knew Usopp and Nami couldn't handle them. Same to Sanji.
  3. He got enraged for the most stupid things like beast pirates fodders wasting red beans because of Tama but didn't got enraged by X-Drake destroying her village.
  4. He is literally underestimating the Yonkos since chapter 1000. He never did that before. Not being afraid and not running from a fight is one thing but understamating the strongest people you have ever fought is completely garbage.
I could go on more things but I think those are the most important I can give you now on the top of my head.

And for standards what good protagonists would look like.

Ippo from Hajjime no Ippo. He is incredible because he really fell in love with boxing and made it clear too his former bullies he didn't learned that to get a revenge on them. He was never that type of guy and remained the same. Even knowing he is strong and dangerous he is not trying to take advantage of other people because of that. He sticks to his character. I have only seen anime, I'm not up to manga. And he never underestimates an opponent no matter how big the gap between them it is and even when he becomes a champion he defends his title like he is fighting for it again.

Another one, Baki. He has a clear mission which is become stronger than his dad and he does what he needs to accomplish that. He keeps challenging stronger opponents and learns new things to fullfill his dream. He underestimates opponents but that was always a thing for him since beginning. Which means he sticks to his character.

Also, we can see real development from those protagonist when Luffy doesn't have any. He is the same person of chapter 1 but stronger while Ippo and Baki are completely differents.

Superior to Goku, Naruto and the likes due to his fun fighting style and pre-timeskip characterization. But all in all still fairly generic and only gets worse as the story moves forward as mentionned above. No match for the likes of Edward Elric, Light Yagami etc.

Slowly?

This is a topic I think people simply don't want to have in One Piece but forgets that the story began exactly like that. Was chapter 1 that Shanks said "Luffy said the exactly same things as Roger did" wasn't?
Post automatically merged:

Luffy is great when he is an underdog rubber man and try to come up with creative way to win the opponent.
To me the underdog thing is the problem. He was an underdog pre-timeskip and against Yonkos. All other villains in One Piece he should have been protrayed as above them or at least equal.

He was above Hody and Caesar for sure but he should have being portrayed as equal Doffy, Cracker and Katakuri.
