As a sensei kakashi is atrocious. He spends most of his time reading jirayas erotic novels
As a sensei gai leads by example. Gai can be too much of a high energy at times but at least you can see his commitment.
Most of the time kakashi talks a big game but does nothing. His biggest victories come in the forms of other people lending him power. Zabuza would have killed kakashi if it was not for sasuke and naruto. Gai gave madara a good fight so in the end I will have to choose Gai.

Kakashi's more interesting. There's more going into his character and how he interacts with others than Might Gai. I love Might Dai's backstory and the influence it had on Gai's character, but Kakashi gets his own mini run of chapters, character growth on screen and is confronted with one of his biggest regrets (Obito) by the end of the series.
Both are good, Kakashi's got more going on though.
