We all know that Luffy will not lose like that, it is just a not creative solution by Oda. He wants to explore Kaido's personality more, trigger his flashback, wants Luffy to get knocked down, so he can give him the awakening, he wants Luffy not to lose all of his haki before than then obviously Awakening without haki is not enough against Kaido, he wanted to make many things plausible at the same time.
Luffy got distracted? seriously, isn't he has FS and is in serious mode..?
