I don't get the awakening points. Luffy has only a few minutes to win here. He hasn't even unlocked awakening. How is he going to unlock it, and master it enough to beat Kaido in a few minutes? That makes no sense.

My guess was awakening might be used for stalling, but it seems like Kaido will just let Luffy recover.

No it is not. Manga can't retcon because of anime. The panels makes sense in manga fight not anime fight.
