I still wonder if Rocks will be a relevant character outside of flashbacks. Idk, I have this eerie feeling based on comments from Oda, editors, one anime director, and even the story itself, the "looming" threat of Rocks goes beyond Kaido and BM.

Is he still alive? Is he tied to Kaido in a deeper way than we think? Just a weird plotline that would feel oddly unfinished if he was only a flashback character

The best theory I've seen of Rocks is the one that says he's an example of someone in One Piece who has truly died, since he was completely erased from history and people only die when they are forgotten. Making him also an example of what Kaido doesn't want to see happening to him, a death that no one remembers, unlike Roger or Oden's deaths.
I wouldn't mind this, it would add to Kaido's motivations.
