Character Discussion What considered as a good "chosen one" character?

#1
We all know Luffy is the "Chosen one" in One Piece world.
However, while "Chosen one" is typical for manga, I do admit that Luffy irritates me the most.

In my opinion, the chosen one character should have some unique attributes.
They might have a unique characteristic, different thought process, or inherit a special power. This makes him special in the manga world.
However, we still perceive or feel that those chosen ones will get same penalty like other characters if they did the same mistake.

This is not the case for Luffy.
Luffy got defeated by Kaido just similar to Oden and Kid. However, the consequences they got are massively different.
Kid was put in jail forever like Ace. Oden just got killed after his first defeat.
At the same time, Luffy has luxurious to get defeated by Kaido for 4 times, and to get rewards from those losses instead of bad consequences.
He found perfect teacher, perfect training camp, and unlock multiple power ups.

Personality wise, Luffy is just a stubborn child like Kid and Ace. However, everyone loves him at first sight. Naruto, Deku, etc. still needs to prove over time that they are worthy. This is again not the case for Luffy.

To conclude, One Piece is a world where characters are treated with double standard. For me, this makes Luffy a boring character and ruins the world building and tension as we all know nothing can touch Luffy's invisible plot protection.

Note: I am sure Luffy fans will drag Zoro into the conversation.

Wasn't Luffy also placed in Jail?

Perhaps Oda should give Luffy Talk No Jutsu (Talk Talk no mi), to talk to the antagonist like Naruto did. Just like Luffy he's also a chosen one, instead of Oda making Luffy lose in the first place.

Perhaps that would work better for you
place in jail that:
  • has perfect teacher for him
  • has training ground with unlimited fodders where he practice
  • YC2 does nothing seeing Luffy's training
You might need to learn the "definition" of jail. Look how prisoners were treated in Impale Down, or how Kawamatsu was treated in the same damn prison.

I hate the "Chosen One" trope with a passion, and I honestly struggle to find a good example of it... maybe Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson? Idk.
That's the book where it's revealed that the "chosen one" was betrayed and killed by one of his followers right at the climax of his journey, fucking up the entire world. I think that's a cool subversion of the usual chosen one trope dynamics.

However, I don't think the example you gave is necessarily a case of Luffy's "chosen one" privileges, it seems more like a side-effect of him being the protagonist of the series and the story needing to have certain beats.

For me, what would make Luffy a shitty Chosen one is if he turns out to have the special DF that the Gorosei were talking about. I can handle him being Joyboy, but the special devil fruit would retroactively ruin so many great moments in the series and the whole concept of Luffy taking a relatively lame DF and turning it into a massively powerful weapon through creativity and cleverness.

Scene like these are very common in shonen

Thats a problem specific towards you, not because you don't consider it to "Jail" doesn't mean it isn't if the author already wrote that it is.

we can see the big difference between udon prison n impel down
in impel down luffy almost dying and lost 10 years of his lifespan by ivankov hormone hormone no mi !!
in udon luffy got free training and free teacher because of Queen sloppy job plus kaido say want to break luffy n kid spirits
so yeah kaido n queen are incompetent in this prison system .:pepeke:

OT, a good chosen one needs three things, I believe:

1. Permanent consequences (plural)
2. Great personal costs (also plural)
3. Morally challenging obstacles (again, plural)

In this regard, manga-wise, Tatsuki Fujimoto is ahead of many authors in the Shounen genre with Chainsaw Man & Denji. You could argue that he is also ahead in the Seinen genre with Fire Punch & Agni.

I assume you are talking about Luffy here. Luffy had to go through all of the series until the endgame (before the war ) against the strongest creature using only his normal rubber powers and even if it turns out to be special fruit‚ Luffy conquered all with just creativity to a weak devil fruit irregardless of how strong it is when it awakens. I would say being a D or a Joyboy plays more to his destiny than his rubber fruit turning out to be special at the end of the series almost

“Plot protection.”

Anyway, Luffy isn’t a “chosen one.” It’s been made pretty clear that the story considers that it could be anyone within a certain time frame, but a bunch of people choose to bet on Luffy because he’s a good dude.

This thread is a gripe session because your favorite is as impactful as Luffy. That’s it.

Luffy loses to Kaido
+1 teacher
+1 free gym membership

Kid loses to Kaido
-1 crew
-1 mentally stable first mate
-1 month in prison (before conveniently leaving just before hyogoro decided to train luffy)

Luffy jobs in the paramount war
+1 legendary coach
+1 bear defending ship for 2 years
+1 warlord crewmate
+1 cool looking x scar
-1 ace
+1 sabo

Kid enters the new world
-1 arm

Kid proves once again he's the seinen version of Luffy. A true pirate who doesn't get everything handed to him on a silver platter. Someone write Kidd Piece already.

Whole Cake Island should have been the moment Luffy received so many Ls from a Yonko crew's apocalyptic power.
