Both of you are right. Luffy rescued Zoro and the Vice-Captain protects his captain. That’s Zoro's job as the right hand man.

You can’t accept Zoro's special place within the crew, that’s the problem. Of course they’re saving each other but Zoro is still the Vice and first mate. If Zoro is not there then Sanji steps up as the number 3.
Zoro's sacrifice was huge against Kuma and he supported his captain against 2 Yonko's. First he blocked Hakai and then he protected a knocked out Luffy from Kaido. He also protected Luffy from Dragon Kaido. He carried Luffy away from Big Mom's attack. He rescued his life around 4 times
