When you actually grow up instead of staying a pseudo-nihilist teenager forever you start to cringe at crap like "King of Hell", which is literally what anybody trying to sound mature and dark will come up with for their generic fanfic, and you develop a taste to appreciate stories as what they intend to be and judge them according to how they actually manage such intention.

Again, the core tone of this story is like a bouncing rubber ball. It's about the main character being designed after a literal kid, about a power that evokes carefreeness and unpredictability, about reaching Laugh Tale to do what Joy Boy couldn't, about becoming the freest person alive... and now about bringing happiness to others with drum rythm. That's Luffy and that's One Piece first and foremost.

You are reading a story that is obviously more about making you feel like a kid and filling your heart with wholesomeness than any dark, pretentiously mature (not in actuality), uninspired crap you want to come up with, whether it's Zoro calling himself the king of hell or a fight based on black sparks over and over. As you well said, Zoro being edgy and cringe is for teenagers; hopefully one day you will actually mature and will understand that you were the real kid here, not those who don't pretend like Luffy turning the world into an inflatable house or behaving like rubber hose animation isn't what Oda's story has always been about; which is Luffy using a fighting technique from Tom and Jerry to battle the Government asssassin trying to kill his crewmates.

And of course there will be some seriousness; but you guys don't want seriousness, you want pretentiousness.
“If you don’t like this, you’re an edgy pseudo-nihilist teenager!”

Wow, Luffy, stop being so serious with a whole Gear inspired by Tom & Jerry to fight that assassin!

Gear Fifth won't always be like this. It's joyful, but of course Oda will balance it with seriousness when required; but whoever believes that "Luffy Tunes" doesn't fit the tone which Oda has in mind when writing this story is lying to themselves. The fight isn't over, but this Gear has everything Luffy can benefit from at many levels.

Don't worry, I'm sure Kaido won't be defeated with a joke move.

My man, you are completely wrong from the start from thinking you are above others because of how you see the story

You're free to not like it, but if you don't see how fitting this is and would rather Luffy sending some non-contact black sparks as his fighting style then you don't get Oda in the slightest.
Dude, you sound like such a dick lmao

"i'm the keeper of the truth

i understand Oda

i know everything Oda wants to do with his manga

my way of seing the manga is the right way"

The goofiness is fitting, the lack of impact behind these attacks is the thing that's not fitting. The fact it's gone from serious to goof to serious in such a crucial point in the serious is fitting but Luffy always got rekt even when being goofy. Luffy now has ultimate plot armour, he gets to act stupid and have no consequences and it's fitting and fine because it's goofy?!

imo even the goofiness is not fitting

Luffy being a goof and using gags during fights against the villains? yes, completely fine and Oda has done from the start

Luffy turning the VILLAIN into a gag during the fight? nope, and Oda chose to this at the absolute worst time, doing it to the Worlds Strongest Creature

If this was a very goofy villain like Buggy, Ceasar, Wapol, Moria and so on, i could see it, but Kaido is a mostly serious character with his only gag being drunk, which is completely fine

This is meant as the climax of the vs. Yonko Saga, the final fight built up since the start of the Post-TS

and what do we get? Kaido turned into a joke (not powerscaling wise, he is still strong and capable, but his portrayal looks like a joke)

i think the goofiness does not contradict the seriousness of the situation but adds a new layer to it. luffy is clowning kaido but his face and smiles in the chapter does not look like he is joking he in killer mode.
luffy having fun and throwing stupid things while giving menacing stares at kaido show his goofiness is not just lolololol but him using his new powers to insult kaido on top of beating him down. he does not simply wants to win the fight he wants to humiliate the man who slaved wano.

is like the villain from roger rabbit. the cartoon effects made him look more deranged and dangerous instead of making things lighter. i think this is partly what oda is trying to do with luffy, we are supposed to laugh at his jokes but know how powerful they are.

See, the issue people have with the goofiness isn't merely that it exists. Its that it was pushed into the fight at the 11th hour in a battle against a character who is supposedly one of Luffy's greatest all time rivals.

Nobody is saying Luffy should be like Guts from Berserk. But its a real issue when we're this far into Luffy vs Kaido and Oda, for whatever reason, feels the need to write a chapter full of gags. You can't on one hand have Luffy using Kaido as a jumping rope and then say that Luffy is slowly dying in his fight against kaido.

The gags kill the tone of what is otherwise supposed to be a serious battle.

No chief. Everyone “gets it,” Gear 5 isn’t an obscure concept in a graduate philosophy textbook. Making sense =/= I have to like it.

I don’t want to see the people that played roles in murdering Ace (BB + Akainu) get turned into gags.

Like take King and Queen for example. Their powers are goofy. Queen can literally shit his neck and tail from the rest of his body, King can use his beak as a projectile. Its goofy as hell.

But their fights against Zoro and Sanji were still serious. The gags did not effect the tone of the fight. Compare that to 1045 where Luffy's eyes bulged out of his face after taking an attack from kaido.
Post automatically merged:

It seems like Luffy isn't taking the fight seriously, because he's literally never reacted to kaido's attack in such a ridiculous way.

Can anybody post a the finale of the arc against the final BAD guy with this consective amount of looney toons actions since "ONE PIECE HAS ALWAYS BEEN GOOFY"
:kayneshrug:
If the Kaido fight ends with pure goofines you can ride the high horse all you want but we're still not done.
It's like if you got mad at the Water Luffy chapter in Alabasta for ruining tension without seeing the final showdown.
