That could be a very good possiblity.
But the consequences make me believe they actually fought.

Gaint scar on Akainu, Aokiji Loosing a leg.

and their battle continued for 10 days and they both changed the whole climate of punk hazard. Probably due to them unconsciously using their awakening.

They can't create such environment without a big all out fight.

Aokiji being a member is a great possiblity but It was said akainu pitied aokiji after beating and didn't kill that's the point they both agreed to work together.
