It's legal in that island so it wasn't an issue.

I did research on this a while back and it's mostly illegal in southern Europe (Italy, Spain )bc of messy tourists. In Germany it seems to be a gray area. do you have any personal experience with this? BC I don't wanna end up getting woken up by some authorities and fined

Depends on the area. Best thing is to just ask locals. But I never had any issues and we went camping/sleeping on the beach multiple times by now.
