ConquistadoR

The Rogue Prince
I guess it makes sense tbh.

World Govt. should try to hide the fact that one of the 20 Kings was assassinated in Mariejoa, since that shows that they are not able to guarantee security even in their own fortress. Let alone outside it.

Hadn't the info spilled out, they would have probably spread the news that Cobra was killed on sea, while returning to Alabasta, or something like that.

This way, instead, makes them lose face in front of the whole world.
"The World Govt. can't even protect one of our Kings during an event like the Reverie, right under their nose!!"

Yeah, Sabo is taking the fault of the kill (a Revolutionary) but still makes them look incompetent.
To make a real life example: imagine if the Swiss Guard failed to protect one of the main cardinale during a Conclave, or if the security staff of a NATO meeting failed to protect a country's rapresentative...
Alright, it makes more sense this way now that I think about it.
They would've wanted to change the narrative even more than what actually happened but Morgans didn't budge.

Since I'm on a 1-time-spree, here is some more Headcanon of mine
- The assasination was actually meant to be against both Vivi and Cobra (to end their bloodline once and for all, since they were the traitors among the original 20 kings)
- Sabo was somehow present when Cipher Pol or Kuma or some other person was executing the deed, starting with shooting Cobra or something
- In a moment of quick wit, he realized three things: 1.) The second shot would be against Vivi, so he needs to make sure she won't meet the same fate as her father and 2.) Since only he, Vivi, Cobra and CipherPol/whoever the assassin is are present at the scene, he'll probably be framed for it; and if he's being framed, then 3.) Saving Vivi would not only save the princess' life, but also provide him with an important witness to prove his innocense
- This Point 3.) will be a callback to Alabasta by Oda, since Vivi back then was also (apart from the SHs; and Cobra who was far away) the only one during the big battle between rebels who knew that Crocodile was a fraud and her father was innocent; and in the end it was she who stopped the fighting by convincing the crowd; similarly, she's now the only one that knows of Sabo's innocence and she now has to convince not only a crowd, but the entire world that he father was being lured in a trap and Luffy's brother was framed for it
- So while Cobra got shot in front of Vivi's eyes, Sabo quickly turns towards a shocked Vivi, grabs her and flees the scene, possibly getting help from his Rev Commanders and perhaps even Kuma who would block off the path for Cipher Pol who chase after Sabo (if Kuma is not the one doing the assasinating, that is; conclusively, Kuma would not be rescued as intended by Bonney and the Revs, but stays behind to protect them and allow them to flee)
- While fleeing from Mary Joa, Sabo reveals to Vivi in just a few words that he's Luffy's brother, and Vivi therefore trusts him and they escape Mary Joa
End of Headcanon :moonwalk:
Admit it, that would be pretty cool, wouldn't it:sweat:
