Yamato didn't damage Ryokugyu because of plot reasons: it's not her fight. The blow is meant to hype Yamato, but still allow her to be sidelined. If it looked like she did serious bloody damage, GB would have to fight her.

It's meant to show that she can fight him if she had to.
