mihawk may not be particularly charismatic – or have any feats to write home about – but he does have some things going for him: 1) he is polite 2) he is hardworking 3) he understands the power of turning strangers – and even enemies – into friends 4) he doesn’t meddle in other people’s affairs 5) he doesn’t treat other people as tools/commodities
even if these traits don’t sound very glamorous or badass, all of them are conducive to maintaining healthy, normal, stable relationships with other people. a person with such traits won’t annoy, insult, sabotage, or deceive another. so once a friendship or a working relationship with such an individual has been established, there is no need to break it off.
and yet…mihawk lives alone and has no crew, even though he CAN get along with other people. why?
well, what do we know about his past? very little. but we do know that shanks was his friend and rival – that’s a fact. but how would he know shanks if the latter spent his childhood and teenage years on oro jackson?

i like the theory and i think it explains how shanks and mihawk came to know each other (let’s say mihawk grew up with his mother but was occasionally visited by his father, with a certain ginger boy in tow).
one day, his friend shanks confessed to something that made mihawk forever wary of other people – to the point he’s forsaken almost all human contact:
mihawk didn’t want anyone near him after this. he felt his swords he can trust – but humans? absolutely not.

which brings me to the baboons. many fans jokingly call mihawk a vampire cosplayer (because of his name – dracule - and his aesthetic). well, he’s not a cosplayer. he is an actual vampire, in the sense that he drinks blood. the baboons are there so he can drink their blood – a regular drink can be contaminated/poisoned but the blood in a baboon’s blood vessels can’t.
