Especially since his boat is a tribute to the dead. Green candles are for funerals/mourning IIRC. Seances and such too maybe? Its all to do with death anyway somehow.
Why did he choose this place to make his home? Not just because it was so isolated right, surely? Mihawk has heavy Christian themes and there are aspects of it in the WG/with Imu I think and throughout OP too.
Mihawk has always given me the lonely, isolated, atoner vibe. A man isolating himself for his own sins/mistakes, at the cost of others lives most likely, maybe people close to him especially too or and just "innocents" anyway.
