That's how I interpreted it

If he used FS before that, luffy might have known and commented on it. And he would have taken much less hits from them. Kaido's whole MO is give me everything you can and I will face tank it and fuck you up. He only dodged Zoro's hiryu kaien and some of luffy's hits before.
