1. Yamato has no reason to stay. Momo destroyed that bunk theory when he told Yamato to stand down and also that they would take care of themselves.
2. There is a 99% chance Yamato fights Catarina. If that doesn't happen, either zombie Kaidou or Gecko Moria are other interesting possibilities against the BBP.
3. Oden went to laugh tale and abandoned the WBP to do so. Why wouldn't Yamato go to laugh tale with the future pirate king's crew.
4. Yamato's devil fruit and haki can help serve as a shield for the weaker straw hats. Yamato draws the enemies attention and Usopp snipes as an example.
5. There is no reason to deny Yamato for nakama if he was going to take a Geezer Tree and Unicorn from thriller bark (would apply to Carrot as well)
6. There is also precedent in joining without active recruitment (Robin)
At the end of the day if I'm wrong, I'm wrong. But I remember last week there were fake spoilers of Caribou on the sunny (scene happened at the castle), straw hats leave wano (were preparing to leave but still at port), and hints of a bounty for Mihawk. Even the hint showed someone running and jumping on rooftops which did not happen (implying yamato was running for the ship).
