Well the canon non canon thing comes from the idea that anime can contradict the manga, so when it does this you have to choose 1 over the other. And in a manga discussion people will choose the manga which is written by the original author (now OPM has deviated from this, I don't know by how much since Murata seems to be taking over, however I think One is still credited as the writer so there's that).
