Shanks is Mihawk's rival because he was in the race. And you don't have to be in the race to receive recognition. I doubt WB went around challenging people to get his title. It's all reputation. The fact that they felt compelled to mention Shanks proves he is a contender. They essentially said being better than Shanks is what made Mihawk the WSS.

If anything, it's a bad thing that Branew only says Skill as this has been a huge selling point for those that say Shanks>Mihawk and the swordsman title refers to skill.

Why are people screaming like they can't read. Mihawk surpasses Shanks in skill. Of cos he has the best swordsmanship

Let them celebrate the obvious thing, Mihawk superior in swordsmanship skill hence why the title.. but who is stronger? A fact is Mihawk run away from duel with Shanks.. this is what Canon and clear..
