Which is the same pronounciation as the Kanji 剣 which essentially means Sword.
It is called
Furigana & it is there, so that people who cannot read a particular Kanji can read the the spelling of it in
Furigana.
In Mihawk's title you have "Kenshi" (Swordsman) which is spelled out entirely in Kanji so the
Furigana for "Kenshi" sound is put above it. So that people who don't know the Kanji for "Kenshi" can read the
Furigana & understand the meaning.
