Here we go baybeeee!! It is 9:20pm pst on the 31st of December, as I'm writing this. We gone end the year on this Garp wank thread Either I'm gonna look like a genius by the time the series ends for making this, or a big ole clown lmao. But mane who gives a fuck we goin out with a bang. So without further due, let's start the mini wank thread on the GOAT of the golden generation.
Character make-up of Monkey D. Garp:
GARP THAT DAWG!!
I'm going to keep the powerscaling aspect of this very simple with straight up bullet points with not giant paragraphs.
Bloodline: Bloodline we know matters a fuck ton in the world of one piece. It defines a person's potential. Hence some bloodlines are sought to be erased. The bloodline of Monkey D. Garp is one such bloodline. His son is the only man in the 800 years of the World Government, to have created an organization that frees slaves on a large scale basis. Raised an army that defies the biggest powers in the world and is aiming to take on the Marine HQ + CP0. Arguably the biggest criminal in World Government's history. His grandson is the future pirate king, the future strongest mf on the seas. He is the "origin" of the ultimate bloodline in the world of One Piece: Monkey D . So with that established let's get into the nitty gritty.
Garp VS Top Pirates:
God Valley Clean Up:
- Fought on a constant basis with Gol D. Roger, the one considered the top pirate on the seas. A feat nobody else but he has. Not even the likes of Whitebeard competed against Roger on a consistent basis (as evident by the 6 year span Oden was on the crew with him) like Garp. But not only he competed, he cornered Roger many times.
- The Biggest event that happened before his prime, God Valley. He was 1 of half of the duo that overthrew the strongest pirate crew of that time. A crew that consisted of his peers like Newgate/Shiki/Big Mom/Captain John/etc, and of course Xebec. What's crazy is God Valley is just one of the many Legends when it comes to Garp.
That boy built different.
- Did a 4 vs 2 against Xebec/Newgate/BM/Kaido, alongside Roger. This panel is clearly a panel of the actual battle, unlike the other panel where the entire rocks crew is shown with Shiki/John/etc in the background. For people who make excuses like "rrhhhh Whitebead betrayed him", whether y'all think WB was bitch made and betrayed his captain when he needed him the most, is up to y'all. That boy Garp just built different like his grandson Luffy. I know y'all aint forgot Roger's boy and Garp's boy teaming up together at MF. This is the same exact shit. What's funny is the same mfs who hold Ace to be PK cause of being Roger's son, don't hold Garp at the same exact status as Roger, despite his grandson having more potential than Roger's son.
But we won't talk about that agenda bias.
Sorry but no bumass pirate other than Roger got a feat equivelant.
Garp's demeanor when hyping up pirates or confronting top pirates:
When he hypes up the two top dogs of the Roger Pirates, the mfs he fought against the most, giant smile on his face:
Oh he tryna go after Roger? Giant smile on his face:
When he hypes up the three Rocks Babies, giant smile on his face:
When he confronts the strongest Rocks baby who's trying to dehype him, mans got what? a giant smile on his face:
NOW at the age of 78. When the fans are saying this mothafucka is washed. Oh he's so outta his prime all top tiers wash him. That Monkey D. fucking Garp, when on his way to face an emperor of the sea who has a stacked crew of legendary pirates... What does he have on his face? A Giant Fucking Smile.
If y'all don't know what that smile means. That's the smile his grandson be showing when he toys with mfs or knows ain't no bumass mf beating him. When he hypes up and compliments dude like Law/Kid/etc, while smiling right at their faces. Yea that same grandson many of y'all wank as the strongest of his generation who'll surpass everybody and their mothers. All that shit he got, he gets it from none other than his OG grandpapa.
So when this dude is smiling at these top tier pirates that he's went up against before, some of them on numerous times.... That's because he knows he can whoop on all them mfs and they ain't jackshit to him. Especially them Rock-A-Babies that Xebec left behind.

Character make-up of Monkey D. Garp:
Childhood:
Garp's childhood years are fairly unknown when it comes to any information within the manga. However, based on a picture we saw Oda draw of kid Garp, he grew up in the same forest that Ace/Sabo/Luffy grew up in. Fighting with animals and gathering treasure chests. And much like the young trio, Garp used the metal pipe as his choice of weapon during his childhood as well, implying that he was probably spending time within the "Trash Mountain" as well. And much like how Luffy got his eye scar at a young age, Garp as well received the scar near the eye at a young age. So his childhood growing up experience should've been very similar to the one Ace & Luffy experienced in the context of fighting animals in the forest of Goa Kingdom and being around the Trash Mountain.
Teenage years:
This is when he joins the Marines alongside Sengoku & Tsuru. Outside of this not much is known regarding him.
Adulthood:
- He becomes a father in his 20s, with the birth of his son Dragon.
- At the age of 39 or so the man teamed up with the top rising pirate of the time and overthrew a crew made up of Xebec, Newgate, Shiki, Big Mom, Kaido, Captain John, and many other powerful talented people of the same era as Garp. He's also implied to have gone in a 4 vs 2 fight against Xebec, Kaido, BM, and Newgate. But this event did earn him the nickname "Hero of the Marines", before he came to be in his prime. The astonishing thing about this is that this is only simply stated as ONE OF the many legends involving him. Neither mentioned to be his greatest accomplishment or his most important legend.
- A decade after this he 1-shot destroys the Drill head of prime Don Chinjao, drillhead that had been hyped to have been able to break apart a continent.
- He would also then go on to corner the next top pirate after Xebec, Gol D. Roger, on many occasions. Having many clashes and battles with the 1st ever Pirate King. Though it has not been clarified whether the two started their clashes before the events at God Valley or prior to it during Roger's rookie days.
- Entering into his old age, he adopts the PK's son, Ace. Raising the kid alongside his own grandson Luffy.
Old Age:
- The Old Age of Garp is fairly uneventful after the death of Pirate King Roger.
- He spent his time training his grandson and adopted grandson in Goa Kingdom, whenever he could take a vacation and come visit while continuing his normal marine duties.
- Eventually would have to suffer through the death of his adopted grandson Ace. Where he was not able to abandon his duty as a soldier and betray the comrades he had been with for decades. But ultimately did waver when he let his grandson punch him.
- Now recently he seems to have become active even more than before, despite wanting to go into retirement pre-TS. Where he now seeks to go after the Yonko, Marshall D. Teach.
Core of Character:
Garp's character can ultimatly be summed up with two labels and dutiful soldier & a family man. While he was willing to forgo his duties as a marine and not capture Luffy in water 7, then started throwing cannonballs at him due to "image's sake", while having the full confidence that his grandson would manage to escape. He would however have to make a tougher decision during the War of the Best at Marineford. Would he choose to rescue the child he adopted and trained for 15 years or would he chose his duties. In the end he was able to do neither. He wasn't able to let go of 5+ decades of trust and faith that he put into the marines and that his comrades put in him, nor was he able to let go of the child he adopted. As shown where he went to attack Luffy but simply could not come to harm him, and even encouraged his grandchild to punch him if he intends to rescue his brother.
This is about as real as it can get, where a man dedicates himself to a certain ideology and comradery for majority of his life, but then must make the choice between that and his son who chose to go into a direction that would set him in opposition with him.
The core of his character is summed up in this panel below:
And his inner conflict in these heart-wrenching panels below:
But Oda does an even better job in delivering this conflict in the masterful interaction between Garp & Luffy:
The interaction starts with Oda establishing that Garp had been fighting pirates long before Luffy and Ace were even born. Setting the tone that if Garp were to betray the marines he would be betraying something he had spent decades fighting for and siding with an entity (pirates) he had practically spent his entire life fighting. He then tells his grandson, who chose to be a criminal knowing his grandpa was a marine, that he would have to kill him first if he wanted to rescue his brother.
After his grandson says he can't hit him, due to recalling the times he spent with his grandpa, Garp pushes Luffy to hit him by bringing up the threat of Ace's death.
Despite Luffy refusing a 2nd time, he pushes Luffy even more saying that there will be many things in life that he won't want to do, but even still he must do them for his goal. And that'd show him no mercy. Now based on his words, one would think he's geared up fully to attack Luffy. But nope, Oda subtly adds the shaking markers around Garp's face and hands to indicate the internal struggle he faces. Which is also why Sengoku is drawn in this interaction the way he is with the "This mf really puttin up a huge act".
And then of course, as Garp recalls again his two grandsons and their faces of when he was training them. Along with one of them who had practically given up hope to live, now wanting to live. He simply couldn't bring himself to attack his grandson. So he puts up this fascade/act to make it seem like he's trying to stop Luffy, and in a way have luffy punish him for not being able to rescue Ace himself, with that punch.
And of course as Sengoku points out, he's at end of the day a father before he's a navy man. The father in him won the battle over the soldier.
This is one of the most well-done internal conflicts in shounen imo. When you take into account the grey-morality of the OP verse at alarge, when it comes to Marines & Pirates. Many fans make it seem like it should've been a no-brainer for Garp, rescue Ace and betray the Marines. But is that what they would do? Would these fans betray the friends and comrades they've fought alongside near death battles and been with throughout their entire life for 5 decades because they child chose a path knowing it's ultimately going to be going against their parents? I highly doubt it.
The Father & The Soldier. Family vs Duty. Comrades/Friends vs Bloodline. An internal conflict that no good man would want happen to them.
