Yeah I think I agree. He gave us some of the most memorable moments in the series and was pretty great and ruthless. The only negative is the talk no justu lol, but like you said it's more on Naruto than him. I'd give him smth like an 8.5 overall with all of that. But I voted for 9

Overall 8. Lived up to the hype and was a genuine threat, him leveling the entire village is one of the most memorable moments in the series.

Really solid villain

Great fights : Jiraya, and Konoha village were great and part of the best of the show

Good build up : Akatsuki was had been built up for a long time and delivered

Great backstory and story : Âme village, Jiraya teaching, Hanzo/Danzo etc. That was very good. And Ame setting with the rain etc was really good

And great mystery : Pain secret with different bodies etc was solid. Same for his fighting style and rinnegan

But two/big weakness :

Pain vs Naruto : hype in the beginning but too much. Naruto ruined the fight being too strong too quickly. And the TNJ in the end was awefully aweful.

Pain placement in the story : that guy should have been end game villain. Not some middle boss. His themes and build up etc deserved a end game.

Pain/Nagato after the fight : Nagato after the fight with Edo etc didn’t have any real purpose and was a bit lame.

Agreed. Pain as the final villain would have been great, 2 students of Jiraiya, One led astray and another on the right path. It would have been a great cap off to the series. Hell do a rewrite to get the sasuke stuff resolved before the pain invasion and cut out obito/madara and its a solid conclusion to the story with the village finally accepting him as their hero.

By far the best villain in Naruto.

Yeah he was awesome and that stretch of Naruto is probably peak. If it ended there or shortly after that Naruto would be even more GOATED lol.


Very few hype moments eclipse Pain. The only one that comes to mind immediately is Madara's intro

I don’t take how Naruto took care of him into consideration, what matters is his personality, abilities and design.

Let’s face it; when Pain appeared as a villain with all those bodies and killed Jiraya, he was definitely the most exciting villain around. Design and abilities 10/10 easily.

The reason why I’d rate him as 8/10 is that his backstory didn’t fully convince me. I understand the despair after Yahiko’s death, but it’s a big leap from “I want to bring peace” to “I want to bring destruction” imo. (Kishi repeated this similar leap with Sasuke later.)

Especially since Nagato wasn’t a good leader and had a mild personality, didn’t sit totally well with me. Add him not trusting Obito at first to then listening to Obito out of nowhere… Like dude are you dumb or what.

Powers - 10/10
Personality - 10/10 - I liked the idea that he wants to bring peace through great pain. Really fitting for an antagonist like this and really reminded me of Lelouch’s plan in Code Geass.

Dude only gets dropped to an 8 because of how Kishimoto ended him, talk no jutsu leading him to kill himself and reviving everyone. But maybe I shouldn’t consider this because that’s more a problem I have with Kishimotos writing but meh

Yeah. I get that’s more of a gripe with the author than the character, but it just can’t be ignored how much Pain was done dirty here.
