Keep in mind we have no clue or explanation for what stopped Sanji's mind from being taken over by the awakening, as it should've been (thus why he asked Zoro to kill him)
My theory: Sanji at some point will stop his transformation with Conqueror's Haki. It's "Judge's will and beliefs" VS "Sanji's will and beliefs" (and Zeff's probably, since both wanted to find the All Blue but Sanji inherited Zeff's dream), so this will only happen when the All Blue gets addressed for real and Sanji has to face decisive choices.

I also subscribe to it being the thing that stops him from losing his mind or reverses it.
As for Luffy's drawback I believe that to be the happiness. Nika is always smiling, laughing and joking around which makes Luffy lax. This is going to bring the issue of someone getting hurt when Luffy's playing around with his opponent and Luffy will have to face that.
