The Quarterback gets the ball from the Center guy in the offensive line, and either passes it to Wide Receivers, Tight Ends, or Running Backs, or hands it off to the Running Back to run it
The Quarterback and Running Back stands behind the Offensive Line, and the Wide Receivers and Tight Ends line up outside the Offensive Line
The offensive line blocks the defense from trying to tackle the quarterback
On defense, there's the Defensive Line, Linebackers, Safeties, and Cornerbacks
The Defensive Line tries to stop the Running Backs from running, the Quarterback from throwing, and the Quarterback from running
The Linebackers are behind the Defensive Line, and attack the Running Backs that get past the Defensive Line, and Tight Ends and Receivers that make short catches (especially Tight Ends since they're bigger)
The Corners cover the Receivers, and the Safeties cover whoever they think the ball might be going to when it's throw, so they move around
Offensive Linemen and Defensive Linemen are the really big guys, the kind of big defensive guys are Linebackers, then the smallest guys are Safeties and Corners
Receivers can be short and fast or bigger and taller, Running Backs can be either pretty big or really small, and Tight Ends are generally a bit smaller than Offensive Linemen, but way bigger than Running Backs and Receivers
The offense wants to move the ball and either kick it to get a Field Goal for 3 points, or a Touchdown for 6 points, where you can then either kick for another 1 point, or try to score with the offense from right outside the endzone, where you score, for 2 points

The only one of the big four professional sports in the US that doesn't have fundamentally broken rules is Hockey, and Hockey refs are still shit anyway.
Baseball not's horrible, but the way they enforce the pitching is hilariously stupid.
And then Basketball and Football just have unenforceable, ridiculous rule systems that both don't make sense and aren't easy to call. Trying to call holding in the NFL in real time with all these fast athletes is just impossible, and the league knows and doesn't care.
