Gekiga is the ancestor of seinen, which was the second type of japanese comics alongside manga (manga stands for whimsical image while gekiga stands for dramatic image). It occurred mainly in the 60s and 70s before slowly getting absorbed by manga. It had interesting adult themes, mainly drama, violence or poetry. You probably know Takao Saito who made Golgo 13 (3rd best selling manga in the world), who was one of the founders of the movement.
